Men's lacrosse fills the conference accolades

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Peach Belt Conference released their annual all-conference awards this afternoon with the Flagler College men's lacrosse team receiving 13 total awards.

Six major awards were given out on top of the PBC First and Second Team All-Conference. Tying University of Montevallo, Flagler brought home three major awards in Midfielder, Defender and Freshman of the Year. Outpacing every team, seven Saints earned first team all conference while three earned second team. The 10 first and second team awards is the most of any institution this year. Selected on the first team was Trace McDonald, Griffin Moore, Jack Pilla, Dempsey Gibbs, Ty Scheckenbach, Mekai Nelson and Brendan Watson. Selected to the second team was Ben Nyberg, Gordon Ogden III and Conner Delz.

Capping off the season of his career, Watson earned Defender of the Year as well as First Team Short-Stick Midfielder. the senior was joined by Pilla who was named Midfielder of the year and Will Linko who was named Freshman of the Year.

Watson finished the year 18 total caused turnovers which ranked him sixth in the conference. With 33 ground balls, Watson led Flagler and was eighth in the conference. During the season, Watson was also named PBC Defender of the Week (2/23, 3/16).

Despite missing majority of the season, Pilla returned when it mattered most. Returning for conference play, Pilla scored three goals in both games against Lander University and Montevallo. Against University of Alabama in Huntsville, Pilla scored one goal and had two assists. Pilla is one of three Saints to be on the first team midfield line.

Linko stepped into the Saints attack line seamlessly. Leading Flagler in goals with 27, the Pheonixville, Pa. native is sixth in the conference. Against Virginia State University, Alabama Huntsville and Emmanuel University (Ga.), Linko scored four goals.

McDonald led the conference in assists per game at 2.5 and was tied for second in points per game with four. McDonald finished with 56 total points, third in the conference and first for Flagler. Gibbs and Moore finished as the Saints No. 4 and No. 5 in scoring. The freshman-senior duo combine for 48 total points. Gibbs finished with 21 goals and five assists while Moore had 17 goals and five assists. Nyberg was the Saints No. 2 in scoring. The senior attackman totaled 23 goals on 11 assists which landed him seventh in total assists and eighth in total goals within the conference.

Flagler's defense statistically finished as the best in the conference as well as is currently ranked No. 20 in goals allowed in NCAA Division II. Scheckenbach finished with 22 caused turnovers, third in the conference and tied for No. 40 in DII. Nelson collected 25 ground balls which is third for Flagler and caused 11 turnovers. The Mount Saint Mary's University transfer also scored one goal against Alabama Huntsville. At LSM Ogden III found 17 ground balls and caused four turnovers. Stepping in at face, Ogden III won five face-offs. Adding to a plethora of standout freshman, Delz was another focal point of Flagler's defense. Finishing third on the team in caused turnovers with 15 and found 10 ground balls.
