Senior Day shootout falls short for the Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Flagler College men's lacrosse's annual "senior day" celebration fell short as Flagler fell 15-14 to the University of Montevallo this afternoon at the Flagler Lacrosse Field.

The conclusion of the match celebrated the graduation of 15 Saints. Among the graduating class was Mekai Nelson, Gordon Ogden III, Walker Smith, Wade Lamon, Trace McDonald, Ben Nyberg, Mitchell Lynch, Beau Howard, Max Hartsock, Jacob Hauser, Auggie D'Ambrosi, Brendan Watson, John Kersey, Jack Pilla and Ian Plott.

The Saints finished their final regular season game of the season, falling to 9-5 and 3-1 in conference. Montevallo leveled to 7-7 and 3-0 in conference. The Saints fate of hosting the Peach Belt Conference Championship rests in the hands of Lander University. With a Lander win of two or more goals over the Falcons, the Saints will reclaim the No. 1 seed in conference and host the tournament. With a Falcons win, the Saints will travel to Montevallo, Ala. for the start of the conference tournament on Friday, Apr. 24.

Gaining an early 3-0 led, the first quarter was led by a fast Saints offense from Will Linko, Nyberg, McDonald and Griffin Moore. This was the Saints first of three, three goal runs. Midway through the second, the Saints recaptured the lead with their second three goal run, led by McDonald who scored two goals and one assist in that sequence. McDonald would go on to scored six total points, his third of six or more this season. Pilla and Linko also scored three goals with Nyberg, Watson and Cole Gaudet scoring one a piece.

Despite the high scoring, the Falcons and Saints had a defense heavy match. The Falcons amassed 28 turnovers with 17 being caused by the Saints. Watson had a monster game, totaling a new career high four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Ty Scheckenbach and Conner Delz both caused three with Scheckenbach also scooping three ground balls. Ogen III tied his career high in ground balls with six.
