AMERICUS, Ga. – Flagler College scored eight unearned runs thanks to four errors by the Georgia Southwestern State University defense in a 14-1 win Friday night in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at Hurricane Stadium.
Flagler improved to 26-12 overall and 13-9 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern has lost eight of its last nine games to drop to 19-21 overall and 11-11 in conference play. That was the worst home loss by Georgia Southwestern since losing to Young Harris College 20-1 back on March 30, 2018. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The Saints held a slim 2-1 lead through five innings. Back-to-back singles by
Jesse Sullivan and
Payton Palladino got the sixth started for Flagler. After a sacrifice bunt moved them up a base and a strikeout,
Holden Bradshaw got hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Taylor Shultz followed with a walk to score a run and
AJ Hunerberg ripped a two-run single to left to put Flagler ahead 5-1.
That would be more than enough for
CJ Hanson (6-2), the reigning PBC Pitcher of the Week. He allowed one run on six hits in seven innings of work to get the win. Hanson fanned four. He induced 12 fly outs and five more ground outs on 101 pitches.
Brayden Matthews tossed two scoreless innings in relief and struck out five batters.
Hunerberg finished 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles, five runs batted in, and he scored a run. Shultz went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and he scored three times. Palladino went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and he scored three runs.
Cael Reish finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and he scored a pair of runs.
Evan Koehler (6-3) surrendered five runs on nine hits in six innings. He finished with six strikeouts. The bullpen allowed nine runs, only one was earned, in the last three innings.
Kelsen Johnson hit two singles for the Hurricanes.
