ST. AUGUSTINE –
Riley Rowe (3-7) tossed a four-hit shutout and Stephaine Daly drove in the only run to help Flagler College to a 1-0 win in the opener against the University of South Carolina Aiken, but lost the second game 9-5 in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.
Flagler is now 5-14 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. USCA is 14-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon to conclude the series.
In the opener, the Saints fought a hard battle but eventually found a crack in the Pacers' defense to score their lone run. With two outs, Daly hit a soft ground ball to the third baseman, which allowed
Olivia Burns to score, giving Flagler a 1-0 lead in the fourth.
That would be all of the offense Rowe would need as she scattered four hits and struck out two. She had eight fly outs and nine ground outs, while retiring 19 of the 25 batters she faced.
Mia Fisher had a hit in the fifth for Flagler.
The Pacers couldn't capitalize on their four hits with four batters left on base.
Abbie Kegley (8-4) allowed one run on two hits to get the loss.
Chloe Webb had two hits.
In game two, the Pacers decided to bust open the game in the fourth by scoring four unearned runs to take a 6-2 lead. They added to their lead with three more runs in the fifth to go ahead 9-2.
Flagler didn't go down without a fight. In the seventh Burns reached on a fielder's choice to score Fisher. McQuillan followed with a two-run double to right-center.
Ally Fleming (4-4) grabbed the win for the Pacers. She gave up six hits and allowed two earned runs on the five scored. She induced 10 fly outs and seven ground outs.
Jordan Sheets (0-5) surrendered two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings for the Saints.
Ava Matthews tossed 4.2 innings and allowed three of the seven runs.
Peri Rouillard led the Pacers with three singles, a walk, scored two runs, and drove in two.
McQuillan went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in.
