HARDEVILLE, S.C. -
Jordan Sheets (2-6) grabbed a win on the day, and Kylie McQuillan crushed a two-run homer for Flagler College in an 8-2 win in the first game against USC Beaufort in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Richard Grey Sports Complex. USC Beaufort won the second game, 9-6.
Flagler is now 10-21 overall and 6-6 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort is 20-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Saints will be at home next week to play a conference series against Georgia College State & University, Thursday, April 2
nd at 6 p.m.
The Saints got ahead in the first inning of game one.
Kiley McQuillan had a single to left field to push
Emily Ricci across to make the score 1-0.
In the top of the fourth,
Hannah Smith singled to second base to start the inning. McQuillan crushed a two-run homer to add to the lead, 3-0.
In the last inning, the Saints took a huge lead with a double to left field by
Raquelle Justice and
Chaynie Cornwell came in to pinch run.
Ryleigh Hall singled to center and scored Cornwell. Ricci and Smith both walked to load the bases. McQuillan and Stephaine Daly singled back-to-back to score a total of five runs making the score 8-2.
McQuillan went 3-for-4, batting in five runs and scoring twice. Day went 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs batted in. Smith had a single and scored twice.
Sheets (2-6) grabbed the win for the Saints. She pitched 5.0 innings with two strikeouts. She allowed two runs on six hits and had five fly-outs and six ground-outs.
Ava Matthews finished the game and received her second save on the year on two innings pitched.
Cassie Brundage (5-3) allowed eight runs on eight hits to get the loss for the Sand Sharks.
Taelor Chang went 3-for-4 with two singles and a homer. Catharine Conway had one hit with one run scored.
In game two, Flagler tied the game in the fourth. Three straight walks in a row from Justice, Chole Montalvo, and Hall.
Haleigh Curry pinch ran for Justice and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-3.
Flagler tried to come back in the last inning with a single from McQuillan. Daly and
Annake Meadows were both hit by a pitch back-to-back. Montalvo singled to center and scored two runs. Hall's ground out to shortstop scored another run, but it wasn't enough.
The Sand Sharks offense pushed hard by getting ahead in the first with three runs. They widened their lead scoring three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to end the game, 9-6.
Madison Murphy (11-5) grabbed the win for the Sand Sharks. She gave up six hits and allowed three runs in six innings. She produced 10 flyouts and five ground outs. Emily Morgan closed the game.
Emma Brinkman went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, scored twice and run batted in. Taelor Chang went 3-for-4, scored one batter, and scored one run.
Riley Rowe (5-11) gave up six runs on six 11 for the Saints in four innings. Matthews came in to finish the game and gave up three runs on five hits.
Montalvo went 2-for-3 with two singles and scored once. Hall went 1-for-2 with a homer, three RBI and scored one run. McQuillan went 2-for-4 with a single and double and one run scored.
