ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Freshman goal keeper
Jonah Smith led the Saints to their first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 10 Colorado Mesa University, 10-9 this afternoon.
The Saints snapped their two game losing streak to advance to 6-4 on the season. Against ranked opponents, the Saints hold a record of 1-3, with three of those being one point games. The Mavericks drop their second in a row and fall to 4-2. The Saints will play their second of the week as they travel to the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, Mar. 21 at 1 p.m. EST.
In his second career start, Smith played a crucial part in the Saints victory. Smith accounted for a career high 18 saves and during the Saints third quarter shutout, Smith notched four saves. Through the game, the Smith faced 43 shots.
The Saints smother defense was led by
Ty Scheckenbach and
Mekai Nelson who registered two caused turnovers each.
Griffin Moore,
Ben Nyberg and
Gordon Ogden III each had three ground balls. Three Saints saw action at face-off, with Mitchel Lynch finding the most success. Lynch won 9 of his 13 attempts.
A low scoring match was led by
Trace McDonald and Nyberg. McDonald was the only player in the game to find a hat trick, while also notching one assist. Nyberg accounted for two assists and one goal.
Brendan Watson found his second goal of his four year career at Flagler.
