Saints bounced back too late against Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Flagler College dropped two games at Florida Tech, 11-4 and 4-3, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dr. Nancy Bottge Field.

Flagler leaves with a 0-4 record, while Florida Tech is 5-1-1. The Saints will host the Old Coast Classic next weekend and will open with Chowan University next Saturday at 11 a.m. Valdosta State University and Saint Leo University are in the field as well.

In the first game, the Saints got on the board in the first inning. Emily Ricci singled through the left side and stole second moments later. Hannah Smith singled up the middle to advance Ricci to third. Smith stole second, which allowed Ricci to steal home to put the Saints up in the first inning.

Flagler tied at 4-all with a pair of runs in the fourth. Brooke Maher hit a run-scoring single and scored on Ricci's double to left-center.

However, the Panthers scored three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pull away. Back-to-back solo home runs by Miranda Schwartz and Emma Chisolm broke the tie in the fifth. Chisolm socked a grand slam in the sixth.

Ava Matthews (0-1) tossed 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Alyssa Hunter tossed 1.2 innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits.

Smith collected three singles and scored a run. Brooke Maher and Ricci each collected two hits with one RBI in the opener.

Sammy Murphy (2-1) took the win in the circle as she scattered nine hits and allowed four runs in 4.1 innings. Chloe Fariello tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and received the save.

Emma Chisholm finished 3-for-4 with the two home runs; she scored three runs and drove in five more. Miranda Schwartz hit a double and belted a solo home run in the fifth inning.

In the second game, the Saints allowed three runs in the first and trailed 4-0 after three. Flagler got a run back in the fourth and then plated two in the seventh but left the tying run at second base. Morgan Hicks pinch hit for Chloe Montalvo and was hit to load the bases with one out.  Mia Fisher hit a ground ball to second base, where Hicks was forced out, but Raquelle Justice scored, and Ryleigh Hall scored on an errant throw to the plate to make the score 4-3. A walk and a pop-out ended the game.

Riley Rowe (0-2) went the distance and scattered five hits, allowing four runs with two runs being earned. She struck out three batters.

Ricci and Smith collected two singles each for the Saints.

Kelsey Hahn (2-0) also pitched a complete game as she allowed two earned runs and had six strikeouts with three walks. Hahn retired the first nine-of-10-batters she faced.

Sage Verkler went 1-for-2 with a double, and she scored two runs for the Panthers.
