Saints fought hard but fell short to open the Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College opened their Old Coast Classic with Chowan University, but lost 2-0. Then they took Valdosta State University to battle for 11 innings, but lost 5-4 Friday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Chowan continues the tournament with a 2-2 record, Valdosta State continues with a 3-5 record, and Flagler (0-6) is still searching for that first win. The Saints will take on Chowan again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and Saint Leo University at 5:30 p.m.

Against Chowan, the Saints only had two hits. Emily Ricci started the game off with a double to right center, advanced to third, but was stranded. Olivia Burns tried to keep the game alive in the seventh with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left on base.

Jordan Sheets (0-2) threw a complete game, struck out nine batters, had two walks, scattered six hits, and allowed two earned runs.

Makenzi Curry (2-0) took the win in the circle for the Hawks with 4.1 innings pitched. Abby Rutledge received her first save and tossed 2.2 innings.

Chowan scored two runs in the third inning with three singles and a steal of home.

In the game against Valdosta State, the Saints got on the board first in the third inning. Burns singled to the catcher and stole second moments later. Ricci walked and Hannah Smith singled up the middle to score both Burns and Ricci.

In their last attempt to beat the Blazers, Ryleigh Hall hit a single up the middle, Raquelle Justice reached first on a fielder's choice and Annake Meadows pitch ran for Justice. Chloe Montalvo reached first on a dropped fly ball to center, scoring Hall. Ricci hit a single to center scoring Meadows, but the game was soon over after a throw from center caught Montalvo trying to score.

Riley Rowe (0-2) went the distance and pitched 10.1 innings. She struck out four batters, gave up 10 hits and five earned runs. Alyssa Hunter came in to pitch the last two-thirds of an inning and gave up one hit.

Savannah Barfield (2-0) won the game allowing one earned run on the two runs scored, grabbed six strikeouts and allowed five hits in 6.2 innings. Alyssa Vallad started the game for the Blazers and pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two earned runs.

The Blazers scored in the fourth to be down by one and tied the game in the fifth with a double to center, moved over from a fly out, and scored off a sac fly to center. They went ahead in the top of the 11th with three runs to win the game.
