ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jessica Dowdy scored 18 of her career high 27 points in the second half as Flagler College defeated Clayton State University 70-63 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gym.
Flagler has won two of its last three games to improve to 11-16 overall and 6-13 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State las lost four of its last five games and dropped to 10-16 overall and 7-12 in conference play. Flagler plays its regular season finale on Saturday against Georgia College & State University at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
A Jasmyn Burts layup with 4:43 left to go in the game gave the Lakers a 59-58 lead. But the Saints would close the game on a 12-4 run.
Marley Smith started the run with a layup and a three-pointer.
Dowdy added eight rebounds and four assists to her line. Smith recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and a career best 15 rebounds.
Natalie Herrin chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Flagler dominated the rebounding game. The Saints grabbed 52 boards and limited the Lakers to just 31.
Kyla Greene led Clayton State with 19 points while Burts added 13 points and five assists.
The Lakers forced 25 turnovers but only converted those into 24 points. They only made 15.8 percent (3-19) of their shots from three-point range.
