Saints drop two in season opener against Rollins

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College opened its season and lost a pair of games to Rollins College, 6-1 and 5-1, in a non-conference softball game Friday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Rollins leaves with a 2-0 record, while Flagler is 0-2. The Saints head to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech next Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the opener, the Saints got on the board in the first inning. Brooke Maher singled to left and stole second base moments later. Her teammates, Emily Ricci moved Maher over to third on a sac bunt and Hannah Smith's ground ball scored Maher.

Jordan Sheets (0-1) tossed 4.0 innings, scattered four hits, and two of the six runs she allowed were earned. Ava Matthews tossed three scoreless innings in relief.

Maher collected three singles. Stephanie Daly hit a single in the sixth.

Reese Twiggs (1-0) took the win in the circle as she allowed one run on four hits in six innings. Addison Zajkowski tossed a scoreless seventh.

Marisa Edevane finished 2-for-4 with a double. Rachel Matthiesen hit a three-run double in the fourth inning for the Tars.

In the second game, the Tars scored four runs in the fourth to break open a 1-all tie. Rollins sent nine batters to the plate in the inning. Brooke Theisen led off with a single, followed by a two-run home run from Marisa Edevane. The Tars went on to fill the bases and scored two more runs thanks to a sacrifice fly and an infield single.

Riley Rowe (0-1) took her first loss of her Flagler career as she went the distance, scattered 11 hits, and allowed five runs. She induced eight ground outs and six fly outs.

Emily Ricci collected two singles for the Saints.

Camila Leon-Blanco (1-0) won the game, allowing one run on two hits in 4.0 innings. Rachel Matthiesen, Addison Crawford and Katelyn Kindwell combined to pitch three scoreless innings in relief.

Isabella Golas went 2-for-2 with a double, and she scored a run for the Tars. Brianna Perantoni finished with two singles, a run scored, and she drove in another.
