Saints hold off late Bobcats rally to escape with a win

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Marley Smith scored a game high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to help Flagler College fend off a late charge by Georgia College & State University for 55-54 win in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center.

Flagler improved to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the Peach Belt. The Saints snapped a six-game losing streak at Milledgeville with the win today. The last road win at Georgia College was Feb. 18, 2019 (68-45). Georgia College has lost three-of-its-last-four games and dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play. Flagler visits Clayton State University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Morrow, Georgia.

The Saints led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter but fell behind after a 14-1 run by the Bobcats. Naylah Nuri gave GCSU its first lead, 49-48, since the 3:33 mark in the first quarter after sinking a three-pointer with 2:25 left in the game. Flagler regained the lead for good (53-51) after a trey by Carleigh Grimm with 1:09 left.

With five seconds left and up by one, Flagler had its in-bounds pass stolen and Georgia College called a timeout. With the ball advanced over center court, the Bobcats got a good look at the hoop, but the shot went over the rim.

Grimm finished with a career high 13 points for the Saints. She made 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Aspen Weeks tacked on eight points and five rebounds.

Elizabeth Wynn finished with a double-double for the Bobcats. She scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Nuri tallied 11 points. Natalia Bolden collected 10 rebounds and added nine points.
