ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College's
Mason Gray and
Cooper Smith were selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® NCAA Division II team, released by officials on June 3.
This duo increased the number of players to earn the academic award to 13. Gray earned his third academic all-district honor while Smith received his second honor.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Gray, a senior shortstop, was an accounting major at Flagler and finished a cumulative grade point average of 3.89. The Lake City, Florida native started 41 of the 44 games he played in. He batted .264 with 42 hits, five doubles, 17 runs batted in, and he scored 32 runs. He stole 26-of-30 bases to lead the team and was hit by a pitch a team-high 12 times. Gray is a three-time Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll Gold Scholar and is a two-time academic all-conference honoree as well as a two-time D2 ADA award recipient.
Smith, a senior pitcher, was a sport management major who finished with a 3.91 GPA. The Tallahassee, Florida native made 14 appearances on the hill with 13 starts. He posted a 4-5 record to go along with a 3.44 earned run average. Smith had 62 strikeouts in 83.2 innings pitched and only walked 20 batters. He was a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Gold Scholar last year, earned academic all-conference honors, and was a recipient of the D2 ADA award.
