FLORENCE, S.C. – Flagler College scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stave off elimination with a 6-5 victory over Georgia Southwestern State University at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region No. 1 Tournament Friday afternoon at the FMU Softball Stadium.
Flagler improved to 33-21 and will face Wingate University in another elimination game at 7 p.m. tonight. Georgia Southwestern's season came to an end with a 27-27 record.
The rally in the seventh started with a single down the left field line by leadoff hitter
Kiley McQuillan.
Reese Snipes followed with a double to center field.
Jordan Moss was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Kiersten James drew a bases loaded walk, which scored McQuillan, and the Saints trailed 5-2. A pair of sacrifice flies made it a one-run game, 5-4, with two outs.
Brooke Maher drew a walk and
Emily Ricci was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Lady 'Canes turned to their third pitcher in the game, Pyper McCord. She got
Hannah Smith to hit a slow roller back to the circle and McCord tried to get the force out at home to end the game. Instead, her throw to the plate was high and to the left. The throw went to the backstop allowing James to score from third and Maher all the way from second to end the game.
Stephanie Daly (4-6) tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings to finish the game and get the win. She came in relief of
Alyssa Hunter who went 5.2 innings.
Snipes hit a double and scored two runs for Flagler. Moss hit a double, scored a run, and drove in another.
Regan Lee (3-5) took the loss as she tossed two-thirds of an inning and allowed an unearned run.
Madison Banks went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in, and she scored a run.
Georgia Southwestern trailed 1-0 early but scored five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.
