FLORENCE, S.C. – Hali Scott (9-6) and Lily Honeycutt combined to limit Flagler College to two hits in a 5-1 victory for Wingate University at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region No. 1 Tournament Thursday evening at the FMU Softball Stadium.
Wingate, the No. 4 seed, improved to 38-21 and advanced to face No. 2 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Francis Marion University in the winner's bracket game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Flagler dropped to 32-21 and will face Peach Belt Conference-rival Georgia Southwestern State University in an elimination game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Scott tossed the first four innings and allowed an unearned run and one hit. She recorded five strikeouts. Honeycutt collected the save after three scoreless innings. She retired nine-of-the-11 batters she faced.
A pair of run-scoring singles by Wingate in the bottom of the third inning broke a 1-all tie. Hannah Stevens and Scott led off the third with a pair of singles. A ground out moved the runners up a base. Jaden Burns broke the tie with a single to right field. A walk loaded the bases then Laney McLaurin hit a ball that was heading up the middle, but Flagler shortstop
Sydney Stewart made a diving stop and tagged second base for a force out. The ruling on the field was that the runner was safe. Scott scored regardless to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
Scott belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
The Saints scored their run in the third. With runners at first and second,
Brooke Maher hit a fly ball to left that was misplayed by the Bulldogs left fielder. That allowed
Kyla Knier, who was hit by a pitch, to score.
Jordan Sheets (10-6) allowed five runs on 11 hits in four innings of work.
Stephanie Daly tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
Kiley McQuillan and
Reese Snipes both hit doubles for Flagler.
