ST. AUGUSTINE - In the final ITA Division II Top 50 ranking of the season, the Flagler College women's tennis team moved up to No. 5 in the nation. In the ITA's lone regional ranking of the year, the Saints were ranked No. 1.
Last week, Flagler competed in the NCAA Division II National Championship. Playing their way to the final four, the Saints fell to the eventual national champion and top-ranked Barry University, 4-1. Prior to that match, the Saints defeated No. 41 University of Charleston (W.Va.) and No. 4 University of North Georgia, 4-0. The Saints ended the season at 23-6. Joining the Saints in the top five was No. 1 Barry, No. 2 Nova Southeastern University, No. 3 Midwestern State University and No. 4 North Georgia.
In the region, Peach Belt Conference affiliated institutes occupy the top three spots. The Saints hold No. 1, followed by Night Hawks at No. 2 then Columbus State University at No. 3. Catawba College holds the No. 4 slot while Wingate University takes No. 5.
Dana Heimen moved up to No. 5 in the nation and took No. 2 in the region in singles after going undefeated during the NCAA tournament. In her three matches, she defeated Sara Martinez 6-2 and 6-2 in the first round, then No. 5 Alina Michalitsch 6-3 and 6-2 in the semifinal round.
Anastasia Nikolova finished at No. 37 in the nation and No. 8 in the region. Nikolova went 1-1 at the national championship as she defeated No. 55 Ashley Moinard 6-3 and 6-0. Heimen and Nikolova were the only Saints ranked in doubles, coming in at No. 4 nationally and No. 2 in the region. The duo defeated No. 7 Angelina Linnikova and Carolina Reis 7-5.
In regional rankings, Flagler is the only school to have three players ranked in singles. Playing the majority of the season at No. 3,
Adela Latalova  closed out the campaign ranked No. 11, out-ranking six other school's No. 1 players. Latalova finished the season with a 18-2 record and on an 11-match win streak. With two of her matches going unfinished, Latalova defeated Michelle Connor 6-0 and 6-2 in the first round of the tournament.
