Saints finish at No. 4 in the nation, No. 1 in the region

ST. AUGUSTINE - The Flagler College men's tennis team closed out the season ranked No. 4 according to the the final ITA DII Men's Top 50 released Friday afternoon. In the lone regional ranking, the Saints topped the list.

Since the last ranking on April 30, the Saints went 1-1 and closed out the season with a 20-3 record. In their one win, the Saints defeated No. 31 Belmont Abbey College 4-2 in the first NCAA preliminary round match. Joining the Saints in the top five was No. 1 Valdosta State University, No. 2 University of West Florida, No. 3 Barry University, then Lubbock Christian University at No. 5. The teams following Flagler in the region ranking were No. 2 University of North Georgia, No. 3 Catawba College, No. 4 Wingate University, and No. 5 Columbus State University.

The Saints have three players ranked nationally in singles. Simon Malis led the charge at No. 33 in the nation, while also being No. 3 in the region. Malis is closed the year on an eight-match win streak, with seven of them coming at No. 2. Since the start of the fall, Malis has put up a 18-2 record. At No. 42 in the nation and No. 7 in the region was Aniss Rafiq. Baptiste Mercier closed ar No. 45 in the nation and No. 10 in the region with a 14-5 season record.

Flagler is the only school in the region to have four players ranked. Ilian Borlee was No. 18 in region after going 24-2 on the season with 18 of those wins being his current streak.

In doubles, two Saints pairs were ranked in singles. Borlee and Malis finished at No. 21 in the nation and No. 2 in the region. This was the second consecutive ranking that the pair has been in the top 25. In their last two matches, the pair defeated Isaac Buerkle and Charlie Fremaux 6-4. At No. 22 in the nation was Aniss Rafiq and Simon Malis.
