DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Flagler College scored nine unanswered runs and
Sydney Stewart ended the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning in a 9-1 rout of Columbus State University in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament Friday evening at the Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
Stewart's blast broke Kyleigh Taylor's single-season home run record, which was 15 in 2022.
Flagler, the No. 3 seed, improved to 32-19 overall and advances to the semifinal round where it will face No. 7 Georgia Southwestern State University tomorrow at 4 p.m. Due to the weather issues, the original game time was changed from noon to 4 p.m. Columbus State ended its season with a 32-25 mark.
After allowing a run in the top of the first, Stewart scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game and then a pair of doubles by
Jordan Moss and
Kyla Knier in the second inning produced the go-ahead run.
The Saints added two more in the fourth and scored five in the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule. Knier hit an infield single with the bases loaded and then Stewart cleared them all with her grand slam.
Jordan Sheets (10-5) recorded her third win of the season over Columbus State. She allowed one run on five hits. Sheets retired the last seven of eight batters she faced. She retired eight batters on fly outs and six more on ground outs.
Knier paced the Saints 11-hit attack as she went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three runs batted in, and she scored twice. Stewart finished 2-for-4 with the grand slam, and she scored two runs.
Kiersten James drew two walks and scored two runs.
Julianna Franklin (17-13), the PBC Pitcher of the Year, allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits.
Mary-Catherine Sorrell hit an RBI single in the first inning for the Lady Cougars.
