AIKEN, S.C. –
Brooke Maher went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored for No. 20 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Flagler College as it lost a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader to USC Aiken (6-3 and 9-7) Saturday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.
USC Aiken evened its overall record to 21-21 and its Peach Belt record to 9-9. Flagler dropped to 25-12 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The Saints step out of conference to face Savannah State University in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Flagler Field.
In the first game, Flagler held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashlyn White led off the inning by hitting a double down the left field line. She took third on Autumn Fisher's single to center. Fisher then stole second base. The next batter, Lydia Johnson, reached on a throwing error by the Flagler third baseman to load the bases. After a strikeout, White was ruled out for interference at third base and there were two outs with the bases still loaded. Kaliyah Hensic belted the second pitch she saw over the left field wall to end the game with a grand slam.
Payton Baker (6-11) allowed three unearned runs on five hits to along with four strikeouts to get the win for the Pacers.
Fisher collected three singles and scored two runs for USC Aiken. White finished with a single and a double.
Jordan Sheets (8-2) took the loss for Flagler. She surrendered six runs (two earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Maher went 3-for-3 with a double, one run batted in, and she scored a run.
Jordan Moss hit an RBI double.
In the second game, it was another grand slam by USC Aiken, this time in the fourth inning, that rallied the Pacers.
Flagler took a 5-4 lead after the top half of the fourth. Pinch hitter Alexis Stout hit a lead-off double to left field. Madison Rogers reached on a bunt single while Anna Turner, who re-entered the game for Stout on second base, took third. Rogers stole second and White was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Rachel Hester came in to pitch in relief for the Saints and Fisher hit the second pitch she saw over the left field fence, down the line, to give USC Aiken an 8-5 lead.
Both teams got a run in the sixth and Flagler added one more in the seventh but couldn't tie the game. The Saints had runners at second and third with two outs, but the last batter flied out to right field.
Ally Fleming (4-7) earned the win in relief. She allowed two runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Fisher went 2-for-4 with the grand slam and a single. Newberry hit a solo home run and a double. She scored two runs and drove in two more.
Stephanie Daly (2-4) surrendered seven runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Hester and
Alyssa Hunter worked in relief.
Hannah Smith went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had two RBI.
Kiersten James collected two singles and knocked in a run.
