ST. AUGUSTINE –
Luke Burton and
Tyler Douglass both scored four goals each to lead No. 6 (USILA Division II Top 20) Flagler College to a 17-11 win over The University of Alabama in Huntsville in a Peach Belt Conference men's lacrosse opener Saturday afternoon at the Flagler Lacrosse Field.
The Saints improved to 11-1 and extended their winning streak to 10 games. They are now 1-0 in PBC play. The Chargers drop to 2-11 and 0-1 in the conference. Flagler will hit the road for its next game on April 12 to play the University of Montevallo at noon (Central Time).
The Saints came out strong with a four-goal run in the fourth quarter which helped them take an early lead, ending the first quarter up 5-2.
Flagler continued with a high-scoring offense all game, even reaching running clock at the end of the third quarter thanks to a last second goal from
Ben Nyberg off an assist from
Ethan Lyles.
Although they ultimately fell short, the Chargers had a late surge in the fourth quarter, holding the Saints to just one goal and having their highest scoring quarter, with five goals.
The Saints defense stood strong with
Matt Mitrega winning 12 faceoffs.
Brendan Watson caused three turnovers and picked up two groundballs. Gordon Ogden picked up six groundballs.
Three different goalies saw the field for the Saints.
Josh Stevens made three saves,
Wade Lamon made two and
Jonah Smith added on one.
Tommy Peer stood out for the Chargers while in goal with nine saves and Jake Sander made six.
