ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College was limited to five runs and nine hits in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Lander University Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field. Lander won both games, 3-2 and 11-3.
Lander improved to 20-19 overall and 8-9 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 27-14 overall and 10-7 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon to conclude the three-game series.
In the opener, Paige Sherman (4-3) scattered five hits and allowed two runs (one unearned) to record the victory. She retired 11 batters on ground outs and eight more on fly outs.
Samantha Bumgarner hit a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless tie. She finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run.
The Bearcats added two more runs in the sixth inning. One run scored on an error and the other run came on a single by Emily Allen. She hit two singles and drove in a run
Sydney Stewart hit a two-run single for the Saints in the seventh inning. She collected two singles and knocked in the two runs.
Alyssa Hunter (12-4) allowed a run on three hits in 3.1 innings for Flagler.
Stephanie Daly tossed the final 3.2 innings.
In the second game, the Saints took an early 1-0 lead as they plated an unearned run in the first inning.
The Bearcats tied the game in the third and scored three more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Linda Moore hit a two-run single, and the other run came on a bases loaded walk. Lander sent nine batters to the plate.
Flagler countered by scoring two runs in the home-half of the sixth. Stewart hit a sharp ground ball back to the pitcher who deflected the ball to the shortstop, but a run scored. Two batters later,
Hannah Smith drew a bases loaded walk to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Lander scored seven runs on six hits and sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh to put the game away. Allen belted a grand slam for the Bearcats.
Jacy Ayers (2-5) got the win for the Bearcats. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with six walks. Mattye Geddings tossed two scoreless innings in relief to get her second save.
Reagan Hill went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Naya Jones collected three singles and scored two runs. Moore finished with a pair of singles, scored two runs, and had three runs batted in. Kara Vonachen hit two singles, drove in a run, and scored a run. Sajarie Jones hit two singles and collected two RBI.
Jordan Sheets (9-3) surrendered 11 runs on 16 hits in six-plus innings before giving way to
Rachel Hester who finished the game.
Jordan Moss finished with two singles and scored a run for Flagler.
