COLUMBUS, Ga. –
Daniel Fischer (2-0) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out a career high eight batters as Flagler College took the second game of a doubleheader 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field. Columbus State scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4.
Flagler is now 15-6 overall and 3-3 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State moves to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is current-No. 18 (ABCA Division II Top 30) Rollins College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Drysdale Stadium.
Fischer dominated as he only allowed three base runners to reach scoring position in the entire game. He retired the last nine batters in a row. Fischer retired 10 batters on fly outs and nine more on ground outs and only threw 103 pitches.
He got all the run support he needed in the second inning.
Eli Maddox led off with a single and went to third on
Tripp Davis' base hit to center.
Caden Kresak followed with a single through the left side of the infield to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Flagler got two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth as well as a single tally in the ninth.
Maddox collected three singles and scored a run. Davis finished 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and one run batted in. Kresak hit two singles and drove in two runs.
Joey Gill (2-1) allowed two earned runs on six hits in four innings to get the loss for the Cougars.
Cayden Evans had two of Columbus State's three hits, both singles.
In the opener, the Saints held a 4-2 lead over the Cougars going into the bottom of the ninth.
Columbus State loaded the bases after Warrick Wilmot started the rally with a single to left-center and Ian King belted a double to right field. Andrew Rubin drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Luke Miller hit a two-run single through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 4-all. A ground out moved the runners to second and third with two outs. Cody Ferguson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Evans ended the game with a single to left field to plate Rubin with the winning run.
Bailey Thorne (2-1) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
Wilmot went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and he scored two runs. Miller collected two singles and drove in two runs. Bryce Knox added a pair of singles.
Steven Reiss (1-2) took the loss in relief for the Saints. He was responsible for the runner to score the game-winning run.
Cooper Smith started and tossed six innings. He was followed by
Keegan Leckband and
Jake Hill.
Isaiah Wellman tossed the final one-third of an inning.
Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
