AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Alyssa Hunter (7-1) tossed a three-hitter and
Sydney Stewart socked a three-run home run to lead Flagler College to a 9-1 win in six innings in the opener at Augusta University, but lost the second game 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
Flagler is now 15-7 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. Augusta is 15-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon to conclude the series.
In the opener, the Saints took advantage of a Jaguar miscue to score two unearned runs, three runs in total, in the first inning. With two outs,
Kyla Knier hit a ground ball to the Augusta third baseman whose errant throw to first base allowed a run to score. Later,
Jordan Moss' infield single scored another run.
Stewart hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give Flagler a 6-0 lead.
In the sixth,
Kiley McQuillan belted a two-run home run to give the Saints a commanding 8-0 lead and Knier hit an RBI-double later in the inning.
The Jaguars pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth when Cadance Winder drew a bases loaded walk. Hunter retired the last two batters to end the game.
She scattered three hits and allowed one. Hunter retired 14 of the first 17 batters she faced.
McQuillan went 2-for-3 with a home run and had three runs batted in.
Hannah Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and she scored a run. Moss singled twice, scored a run, and drove in another.
Ansley Gibson (5-4) allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings to get the loss.
Three different Jaguars hit a single.
In game two, Augusta scored all the runs it would in the first inning. Bobbi Poff led off the inning with a walk and scored on a wild pitch. Ayellad Howard followed Poff with a walk and scored on Winder's single to left field to give Augusta a 2-0 lead.
The Saints got on the board in the sixth when Stewart led off the frame with a double to center field. She moved to third on a ground out then scored on Smith's groundout to shortstop.
Madalyn Spinks (4-2) scattered four hits and allowed one run to earn the victory. She induced 12 ground outs and four fly outs.
Stephanie Daly (2-3) surrendered two runs on three hits in two innings for the Saints.
Jordan Sheets tossed four scoreless innings in relief.
Winder led the Jaguars with two singles and she drove in a run.
Stewart hit a double and scored a run for the Saints.
