ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sydney Stewart and
Reese Snipes each collected five hits while
Jordan Sheets (3-1) tossed a gem as Flagler College finished with 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Wheeling University, 5-3 and 8-0 in five innings, Thursday evening at Flagler Field.
Flagler improved to 14-6 while Wheeling dropped to 2-12. The Saints open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday at Augusta University in a noon doubleheader.
The Saints trailed 2-0 early in the first game, but jumped ahead with a three-run third inning. Stewart led off the inning with single to left-center. The centerfielder kicked the ball allowing Stewart to go to second and then the leftfielder also bobbled the ball to allow Stewart to advance to third. She scored on a wild pitch to get the Saints on the board. After a
Hannah Smith walk, she scored on a double by
Kiley McQuillan's double to left-center. McQuillan later scored on a ground out to give Flagler the lead.
The Cardinals tied the game at 3-all in the fifth inning. But a
Jordan Moss RBI-double in the home half of the inning proved to be the game-winning hit.
Flagler tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Alyssa Hunter (6-1) scattered seven hits and allowed three runs to earn the victory. She struck out a season-high eight batters.
Stewart collected three singles and scored two runs. McQuillan and Snipes each went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and one run batted in.
Kaylin Shields (2-2) allowed five runs on 10 hits for the Cardinals.
Amber Morgan went 3-for-3 with a double and she scored a run.
The Saints wasted little time getting on the board in the second game. A single run in the first, three more in the second, one in the fourth, and they ended it in the bottom of the fifth.
Emily Ricci hit a two-run single to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Sheets tossed a masterpiece as she faced two over the minimum. She allowed only two hits and tied her career-high with eight strikeouts.
Snipes went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Stewart finished with a pair of doubles, scored a run, and drove in another. Ricci collected a pair of singles, drove in three runs, and scored another.
Maria Clark (0-6) lasted 1.1 innings and surrendered four runs on six hits.
