MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Flagler College split a non-conference softball doubleheader against No. 24 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Barry University Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. Barry won the opener 6-2, but Flagler won the second game, 4-0.
Flagler is now 20-8 overall while Barry is 23-12. Up next for the Saints is a three-game series against No. 8 University of North Georgia. The weekend set begins on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Flagler Field.
Jordan Sheets (5-1) tossed a six-hit shutout against the Buccaneers in the second game. She walked four and fanned two, but also got eight fly outs and seven more ground outs. Sheets retired the last six batters in a row.
The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning.
Sydney Stewart led off the frame with a single to left field.
Emily Ricci followed with a bunt single to first, but took second on the throw when Stewart rounded second for a wide open third base.
Hannah Smith, the next batter drew a four-pitch walk, but the last ball was a wild pitch, which allowed Stewart to score. Ricci advanced to third on the wild pitch, but scored when Smith started to head to second base, drawing a throw. The second baseman ran Smith back to first, and Ricci took advantage by scoring from third.
Flagler added two more in the sixth for insurance.
Morgan Hicks drew a lead-off walk and then stole second. After the next batter was retired,
Brooke Maher's single up the middle scored Hicks. Maher took advantage of a miscue by the center fielder and made it all the way to third base. She would score on a single by Stewart.
Stewart finished with two singles, scored a run, and had one run batted in for Flagler.
Reese Snipes went 2-for-3 with a double.
Haelee Angelico (5-5) took the loss in the circle for Barry. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and walked five batters.
Sarah Langlie collected two singles for the Buccaneers.
In the first game, Barry put three runs on the board in the first two innings in route to a 6-2 win.
A bases loaded walk to Sofia Chamorro put the Buccaneers on the board in the first inning. A ground out scored the next run.
Langlie hit an RBI-single in the second to score the eventual game-winning run.
Caroline Figueroa socked a three-run home run in the fourth to give Barry a 6-0 lead.
The Saints scored a pair of runs in the sixth.
Kiley McQuillan's single to left plated the first run.
Samantha Rosenberger (5-4) allowed one earned run and scattered six hits to get the win.
Langlie collected two singles, scored two runs, and drove in another.
Alyssa Hunter (10-2) surrendered six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work to take the loss for Flagler.
Rachel Hester tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Maher finished with two singles.
