Saints sweep doubleheader in dominating fashion

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College scored 29 runs on 26 hits and the team hit a red-hot .531 in doubleheader sweep of USC Beaufort (11-1 and 18-5) Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Flagler improved to 19-7 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort's losing streak was extended to seven games and it fell to 16-15 overall and 1-8 in conference play. The Saints step out of conference to face Barry University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Miami Shores, Florida.

In the opener, it didn't take long for the Flagler offense to get going. Sydney Stewart was hit by a pitch and Emily Ricci drew a walk to start the bottom of the first inning. Hannah Smith followed with a three-run shot over the right-center field fence to stake the Saints to an early 3-0 lead.

Kiley McQuillan hit a two-run double in the second and Jordan Moss added an RBI-single in the third.

In the fourth, Flagler sent 11 players to the plate and scored five runs on seven hits. Stewart hit a two-run single in that inning.

That would be more than enough offense for Jordan Sheets (4-1) who scattered five hits and allowed one run. She fanned three batters. After allowing a lead off single in the top of the fifth, Sheets retired the final three batters in a row to end the game.

Kyle Knier went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had one run batted in. Ricci collected two singles and scored three runs. Mariclaire Sabados went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Moss finished with two singles, a run scored, and she drove in another.

Madison Murphy (2-5) allowed five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched to get the loss for USC Beaufort.

Saria Simmons collected two singles for the Sand Sharks.

In the second game, the Saints sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on five hits in the first inning. Stewart led off the inning with a home run and two batters later, Hannah Smith belted a two-run shot to center field. Later in the frame, Moss hit a two-run single.

Flagler added another run in the second and plated eight more in the fourth. McQuillan socked a three-run home run in the fourth.

Alyssa Hunter (10-1) tossed three innings and allowed three runs on five hits to get the win for the Saints. Rachel Hester and Sheets each tossed an inning in relief. Sheets issued a one-out walk in the top of the fifth, but struck out the last two batters to end the game.

Reese Snipes paced the 12-hit Saints attack as she went 3-for-4 with a home run and she scored three runs. Stewart finished 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, three RBI, and she scored two runs. McQuillan went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Moss collected two singles, scored two runs, and knocked in two more. Brooke Maher finished with a single, three RBI, and scored twice.

Cierra Kinlaw (7-8) surrendered four earned runs and three hits in one-third of an inning to take the loss. Four Sand Shark pitchers combined to walk seven batters.
