AIKEN, S.C. –
Jesse Sullivan's RBI-single in the eighth inning coupled with
Ethan Bobo's (2-0) scoreless relief work helped Flagler College edge USC Aiken 3-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
Flagler improved to 17-6 overall and 4-3 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken fell to 13-11 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow in a 2 p.m. doubleheader to wrap up the series.
With the score tied at 2-all in the top of the eighth,
Jacob Reeves got things started for the Saints with an infield single to shortstop. After the next two batters were retired,
Mason Gray was hit by a pitch. Reeves took third on an error by the Pacer catcher. Sullivan worked a full count on seven pitches and then ripped a single to center field to score Reeves.
Bobo came in to pitch after a leadoff single in the seventh. He gave up back-to-back singles with the latter producing a run that tied the game at 2-all. After that, he retired eight of the last nine batters he faced. Bobo struck out five batters and scattered three hits.
Taylor Shultz led off the game with a home run on the first pitch of the game.
Bryce Fitzgerald hit a double and scored a run for the Saints.
Ben Stubbs started on the mound and tossed six-plus innings. He allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out seven batters.
Blayne Newman (0-3) took the loss on the hill for the Pacers. He surrendered three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.
Griffin Rowe collected three singles and scored both of USC Aiken's runs. Jack Hobson and Hunter Thompson each singled twice and drove in a run. Josh Sharp and Gage Kirkland each hit two singles.
