Saints close out tourney with a sweep

HICKORY, N.C. –Sydney Stewart and Hannah Smith each collected five hits to lead Flagler College in a sweep of its final two games at the McCrorie Family Stadium Grand Opening Tournament Sunday afternoon at Shena Hollar Field. Flagler won the opener over the host school, Lenoir-Rhyne University, 7-5, and took the second game 21-2 over Davis & Elkins College in a game shortened to five innings. In the two games combined, Stewart hit two home runs and a double, drove in seven runs and scored five more.

Flagler evened its record to 3-3 and went 3-1 in the tournament. Lenoir-Rhyne dropped to 2-5 while Davis & Elkins slipped to 2-6. Up next for the Saints is a doubleheader at Erskine College on Friday at noon.

In the first game, the Saints used a three-run fourth inning to break a 4-all tie and hung on to win, 7-5.

Jordan Moss socked a solo home run to left field to lead off the inning and gave Flagler a lead it would not relinquish. Then, a fielding error opened the flood gates as Emily Ricci hit a run-scoring double to center field and she scored on Kiley McQuillian's single to center. Both runs were unearned.

That was enough for Alyssa Hunter (1-0) who made her first start of her collegiate career. She allowed five runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Hunter got 10 batters to fly out and seven more to ground out.

Stewart led the Saints offense going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and she scored two runs. Ricci finished 3-for-4 with a double, one run batted in, and she scored a run. Jordan Moss went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

Faith Carrigan (2-2) surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in four innings to take the loss in the circle for the Bears.

Julia Mardigian went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and one RBI. Kaylan Brown belted a two-run home run.

In the second game, Davis & Elkins scored a run in the top of the first and then Flagler took over the rest of the game scoring 21 consecutive runs.

Knier hit a two-run home run over the center field wall in the first inning to give Flagler a 3-1 lead.

In the second inning, the Saints sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on three hits. Stewart socked a three-run home run in the inning.

Flagler added eight more runs in the third inning and sent 13 to the plate, but got eight hits in the frame. Raquelle Justice had a pinch-hit two-run double.

Stephanie Daly (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win as she held the Senators to one run on one hit in four innings of work. She struck out five batters. Mariclaire Sabados tossed the final inning.

Hannah Smith led the 18-hit attack going 4-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and she scored three runs. Stewart went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and three runs scored.

Alyssia Munoz (0-1) surrendered seven earned runs on five hits in one-plus innings pitched.

Linzey Allard hit a double, scored a run, and drove in another for Davis & Elkins.

NOTE: The 21 runs scored in the second game today Flagler was the most since it scored a program-record 22 runs vs. Wesley College of Delaware, March 4, 2010.
