ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College took advantage of two American International College miscues in the ninth inning of the first game and
Eli Maddox hit a game-ending two-run single in bottom of the seventh in a non-conference doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field. The Saints won the opener 2-1 and the second game, 5-4.
Flagler improved to 11-3 overall while American International dropped to 1-3. The Saints open Peach Belt Conference play next weekend with a three-game series against Lander University at Drysdale Field. The first game is 6 p.m. on Friday.
In the first game, the Saints entered the bottom of the ninth tied at 1-all.
George Gilson led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher and was able to advance to second. Two intentional walks followed to load the bases and
Mason Gray hit a ground ball to the AIC third baseman who could not find the handle on it, and the Saints won the game.
Jake Hill (1-1) earned the win in relief as he closed the game and did not allow a run or a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Daniel Fischer started and allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of work.
Clay Callan,
Isaiah Wellman, and
Blake Pesante all saw time in relief for the Saints.
Payton Palladino collected two singles for Flagler.
Charlie Calvanese (0-1) allowed the unearned run in his one inning of work to take the loss. Hayden Mutz scattered six hits and allowed one run over seven innings for the Yellow Jackets.
Josh Frometa hit a double.
In the second game, Flagler trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Palladino led off the frame with a single to right-center, and then stole second base. Two batters later, he took third on
Taylor Shultz's pinch-hit single. Shultz stole second and then both runners scored on Maddox's single through the left side to end the game.
Clay Callan (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning in the seventh and kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard.
Eli Roberts,
Parker Adams, and
Justin Haskins all pitched in the game.
Mason Gray collected three singles, scored a run, and stole three bases for the Saints. Palladino singled twice and scored two runs. Maddox went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in.
Nick Serce (0-1) took the loss in relief for AIC. He allowed two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Richie Segura singled twice and drove in a run.
