LAKELAND, Fla. –
Colten Reynolds scored the game-winning goal, off a
Trace McDonald assist, with 2:58 left in overtime as Flagler College knocked off No. 16 (USILA Division II Top 25) Florida Southern College, 9-8, Friday night at Berend Field.
The Saints improve to 3-1 for the season so far and the Mocs drop to 0-4. This was Flagler's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the program started in 2022. The Saints will return for a home game against No. 20 Westminster University of Salt Lake City on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Ben Nyberg came out of the gate hot for the Saints scoring the first goal of the game. Nyberg went on to score a hat trick to lead the Saints offense.
Despite that, the Mocs answered back quickly with two goals to create a one-goal lead that they maintained for the rest of the first half.
The Saints managed to take the lead in the fourth quarter with goals from
Jack Pilla and Nyberg to take an 8-6 lead. The Saints held off the Mocs the entire last quarter until Jack Epley brought the difference to one goal with 1:26 left.
Maddux Walton scored the equalizer in the final second of regulation time for the Mocs.
The Saints defense held their own with goalie
Wade Lamon making seven saves and
Josh Stevens making eight.
Ty Scheckenbach stood out, picking up five groundballs and causing four turnovers in the Saints favor.
Matt Mitrega won seven faceoffs.
Mocs goalie Michael Simone stood out with 15 saves.
