Saints sweep Panthers as Snipes hits a walk-off home run in first game

ST. AUGUSTINE – Reese Snipes belted a three-run game-ending home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Flagler College win the opening game against Florida Tech 8-6 and the Saints took the second game 5-4 in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Flagler Field Tuesday afternoon.

Flagler won its third game in a row and improved to 8-4. Florida Tech lost its fourth game in a row and dropped to 5-9. Flagler heads to Salisbury, North Carolina to play in a tournament at Catawba College. The Saints open with Frostburg State University on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and then follow against the host school at 11:30 a.m.

In the opener, the Saints trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. A pair of walks got the rally started and Snipes socked a three-run home run over the left-center field wall to end the game. She went 2-for-3 as she added a double and had the three runs batted in.

Rachel Hester (2-2) evened her record after tossing three innings in relief as she allowed one run on two hits.

Hannah Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Sydney Stewart finished with two hits, including a double, and she scored two runs. Brooke Maher hit a single and scored two runs.

Alex Hendrian (2-4) took the loss in the circle as she allowed eight runs on eight hits.

Malaya Nelson finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and she scored two runs. Celeste Casillas hit two home runs and drove in four for the Panthers.

In the second game, Flagler rallied by scoring three runs in the fourth inning to eliminate a 3-2 Florida Tech lead.

Stewart tied the game with an RBI single and came around to score on Emily Ricci's two-run home run to center field. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in.

The Panthers got a run back in the fifth and threatened to tie the game in the seventh. Florida Tech started a two-out rally as Chloe Fariello singled up the middle and Casillas was hit by a pitch. Miranda Schwartz hit a ground ball to second base, but Casillas was ruled that she interfered with Flagler's second baseman and the game was over.

Stewart collected two singles, scored a run, and knocked in another. Raquelle Justice also had a pair of singles and she drove in a run.

Alyssa Hunter (3-0) remained undefeated this season as she went the distance and scattered seven hits and she allowed four runs.

Hailey Mix finished with two singles, had one RBI, and she scored a run for the Panthers.

Sammy Murphy (2-4) surrendered five runs on seven hits to get the loss.
