Saints and Wolves split doubleheader

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Flagler College and Newberry College split a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry won the opener 2-1, but Flagler took the second game, 6-3.

Flagler is now 6-4 overall while Newberry is 5-11. Flagler hosts Florida Tech in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Flagler Field.

In the second game, the Saints pushed across a run in the fourth inning to break a 3-all tie. Emily Ricci led off the inning with a single to right-center and took second on a wild pitch. After Hannah Smith was hit by a pitch, Kiley McQuillan hit a single back up the middle to score Ricci.

Smith added a two-run single in the fifth inning for insurance. She finished with two singles and two runs batted in.

Alyssa Hunter (2-0) scattered six hits and allowed three runs to pick up the win for Flagler. She fanned three batters and induced 15 ground outs as well as two fly outs.

Reese Snipes went 3-for-4 with a double and she scored two runs. Brooke Maher collected three singles and drove in a run. Ricci hit two singles and scored two runs.

Lex Glemaker (1-5) took the loss in relief for the Wolves. She surrendered four runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

Six different Newberry players had one hit.

In the first game, Mady Brown's double down the left field line scored Brooke Hodges from second base to give Newberry a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

Natalie Wescott (1-2) earned her first win of the season as she only allowed one run on seven hits with six strikeouts. Wescott got 12 batters to fly out and three more to ground out.

Brown went 2-for-3 with the double, a run scored, and one RBI. Hodges collected two singles and scored a run.

Stephanie Daly (1-1) allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to get the loss for the Saints.

Smith collected two singles while Kyla Knier finished with a pair of singles and she scored a run.
