ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College had No. 5 (WBCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia on the ropes but fell short 85-74 in overtime in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
North Georgia extended its win streak to five and improved to 18-1 overall as well as raising its Peach Belt-leading record to 8-1. Flagler is now 8-10 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Saints head north to face USC Aiken on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
The Saints trailed by seven (69-62) with just over two minutes to play in regulation and went on a 7-0 run, all on free throws, to close the fourth quarter.
Carleigh Grimm made a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to force the extra five minutes.
The Nighthawks opened overtime with a 9-2 spurt that put the game out of reach. Five different UNG players scored in that run.
Jazmine Major scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Saints.
Sharale McCormick added 18 points while
Abby Smith contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and tallied three assists. Grimm finished with nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.
Kendall Emener led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field for the Nighthawks. Caroline Martin recorded a double-double with 23 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Emily Trushel tacked on 12 points while Averie Jones supplied 12 points, seven rebounds, and tallied four assists.
