The Smiths combine for 25 points in PBC opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Abby and Marley Smith combined to score 25 points and grab nine rebounds in Flagler College's 63-56 loss to Augusta University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball opener Wednesday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta improved to 4-1 overall while Flagler dropped to 3-4. The Saints stay on the road and will face the No. 20-ranked (WBCA Division II Top 25) Lady Cougars of Columbus State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Augusta went into the locker room with a 38-34 lead, but needed a 10-2 spurt midway through the third quarter to pull away. After an Abby Smith jumper closed the Flagler deficit to two points (40-38) with 7:02 left in the third quarter, Elyse Autry sank the second of two free throws and added a short jumper seconds later to ignite the Jaguar run. She closed it out with a pair of free throws with 1:56 left to go in the quarter.

Abby Smith led the Saints with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and she grabbed four rebounds. Marley Smith added 11 points and five rebounds. She made 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Quinasia Abercrombie recorded a double-double with game highs in points (17) and rebounds (10) for Augusta.

The Jaguars made 18-of-their-28 free throw attempts.
