COCHRAN, Ga. –
Natalie Herrin recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but Middle Georgia State University got a basket at the buzzer to edge Flagler College 56-55 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Morris Gym.
PBC newcomer Middle Georgia improved to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Flagler dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler hosts former conference-rival UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
Marley Smith sank a three-pointer with just five seconds left on the clock to give the Saints a 55-54 lead. After a Middle Georgia timeout, the Knights in-bounded the ball and Mauryah Jones dribbled into the lane, spun, and shot a jumper in the paint. The ball bounced off the rim and as the horn sounded, the ball went through hoop.
The Knights trailed 44-40 in the last minute of the third quarter, but went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:45 to take a 52-44 lead with 5:07 remaining. The Saints scored the next eight points as Abby and
Marley Smith each made a three-pointer.
Marley Smith's tied the game at 52 with 1:55 left.
Dennaye Hinds also scored 12 points for the Saints.
Marley Smith finished with nine.
Jessica Dowdy tallied four assists.
Flagler committed 24 turnovers that led to 19 Middle Georgia points.
Mireia Pou scored a game high 15 points for the Knights. Ella Pritchard added 12 points. Jaida Fitzgerald grabbed a game high 11 rebounds. Cali Levine tacked on eight points and five assists.
