ST. AUGUSTINE – Abby and
Marley Smith each scored 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Florida Tech used a late surge to defeat Flagler College 86-75 in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Flagler Gym.
Florida Tech evened its overall record to 2-2 while Flagler dropped to 3-3. The Saints will take a break for Thanksgiving and return to the court Dec. 3 in the Peach Belt Conference opener at Augusta University.
The Saints had trailed by as many as 15 points, but after a pair of
Marley Smith free throws with 7:06 left to go in the game, Flagler trailed by two (72-70). The Panthers closed the game on a 14-5 run. Florida Tech regained a double-digit lead (84-73) after a pair of three-pointers by Elif Dila Bayrak, the last one with 2:54 remaining.
Natalie Herrin added 16 points, eight rebounds, and four steals for Flagler.
Nandinkhusel Nyamjav led all scorers with 24 points, and she dished out eight assists as well as grabbing five rebounds. Bayrak added 23 points and nine rebounds.
The Panthers forced 17 turnovers by the Saints and converted those into 19 points.
