Saints knock off No. 2 Sailfish to advance to the third round

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Ryan Rivas turned in his 10th clean sheet of the season with five saves to help Flagler College upset No. 2 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Palm Beach Atlantic University 2-0 in a NCAA Division II Tournament second round match Sunday afternoon at the PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field.

Flagler, the No. 8 seed, won its fifth match in a row and improved to 15-2-6 overall. The Saints are 10-0-3 in their last 13 matches. Flagler snapped a four-match winless streak against PBA and this was the first win at West Palm Beach since Sept. 21, 2002. The last time Flagler defeated a No. 2-ranked team was Sept. 3, 2010 at Lees-McRae, 3-0. Palm Beach Atlantic, the No. 1 seed in the super regional, has its season end with a 13-3-2 record. Flagler will head south to take on Rollins College, the No. 5 seed, for a third-round match Nov. 30 at Winter Park, Florida. The game time has not been released.

Rivas tied the program's Division II-era record with his 10th shutout of the season. He is tied for fifth all-time at Flagler. Rivas has five shutouts in his last eight matches played.

In the 33rd minute, Luke Williams received a pass about 40 yards away from the goal. He eluded one defender as he dribbled toward the top of the box. Williams shot with his left foot and ball went past the keeper to his left and into the net.

Insurance came in the 75th minute when Tim Wahlborg took Filip Hornburg's long ball near the top of the box. The PBA keeper off his line to contest the pass, but Wahlborg was able to get by him and score on a wide-open goal.

Flavio Giannini finished with four saves for the Sailfish.

PBA out-shot Flagler 14-8 with Juan Hermoso and Niklas Mahler leading the way for the Sailfish with three shots. Oliver Lindstrom led the Saints with three. Palm Beach Atlantic held the edge in corner kicks, 8-3. Flagler was whistled for 16 fouls while PBA had 11. There were 10 cards handed out, six of which went to PBA, including a red card.

Flagler has not advanced to the third round since 2012.
