WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –
Daniel Becerra broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 72
nd minute to lead Flagler College to a 2-0 win over Young Harris College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament Friday afternoon at the PBA Lacrosse/Soccer Field.
Flagler, the No. 8 seed in the region, improved to 14-2-6 overall. This was the first win in the NCAA Tournament by the Saints since Nov. 13, 2011 when they defeated Mars Hill University, 3-0. Young Harris had its season end at 15-2-3. The Mountain Lions has a string of 27 consecutive games without being shutout snapped. Up next for Flagler is No. 2-ranked (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) and the top seed in the region, Palm Beach Atlantic University. The two teams will meet Sunday at 3 p.m.
Hugues Iguaran's corner kick, from the right corner, was served towards the back post and Becerra jumped up, just outside the goal box, and headed the ball into the top right corner.
Alex Alexandrou gave the Saints some insurance when he knocked in a penalty kick.
Finn Weigelt was in the box and tried to pass the ball to his left. A Young Harris defender slid into the path of the ball, and in so doing, touched the ball with his hand and was called for the infraction.
Ryan Rivas collected one save for Flagler and turned in his ninth clean sheet. James Dee recorded six saves for Young Harris.
The Saints out-shot the Mountain Lions 17-7, and Alexandrou led the way for Flagler with five shots. The Saints also had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Young Harris committed eight fouls and Flagler was whistled for six.
