DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Emerson Kutz came off the bench to score a career high 19 points, but it wasn't enough as No. 9 (WBCA Division II Top 25) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University escaped with a 74-70 win over Flagler College in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the ICI Center.
Embry-Riddle remained undefeated at 3-0. This was the first real test for the Eagles as they won by an average of 39.5 points per game in their previous two games. Flagler had its overall record fall to 2-2. The Saints take on Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Flagler Gym. The game time was adjusted due to the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament also being at Flagler Gym through the weekend.
Natalie Herrin's three-pointer with 4:32 left to go in the game gave Flagler a 68-66 lead. From there, Embry-Riddle closed the game on an 8-2 run.
Jareah Branch's layup with 2:51 tied the game and Laurie Satchell made the second of two free throws to give the Eagles the lead for good, 69-68, with 1:14 left.
In the last 4:30 of the game, the Saints made 1-of-6 from the field and committed three turnovers. The Eagles didn't fare much better from the field going 2-for-7, but they made 4-of-5 from the free throw line, had one turnover, and out-rebounded the Saints 6-4.
Carleigh Grimm came off the bench and tied her career high with 12 points, and she grabbed nine rebounds. Herrin added 11 points and five rebounds.
Eliana Sheplee scored a game-high 35 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Satchell notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Embry-Riddle forced 19 Flagler turnovers and converted those into 23 points.
The game featured five ties and 18 lead changes.
