DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
Filip Hornburg scored an unassisted goal in the 54
th minute but No. 24 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College would fall to the University of North Georgia 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.
North Georgia remains undefeated at home (2-0-3) and improved to 4-3-4 overall and 3-1-1 in the Peach Belt. Flagler suffered its first loss since Sept. 6 and now has a 5-2-3 overall record with a 2-1-2 mark in conference play. The Saints host USC Aiken on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Saints Field on "Officials Appreciation Day."
The Nighthawks forced a turnover near midfield to set up the go-ahead goal. Samuel Gomez gathered the turnover and took the ball across midfield. He passed the ball off to Stephane Shongo at the top right corner of the box. Shongo's pass went into the middle of the box to Jorge Sandoval who then shot the ball, but
Ryan Rivas saved the shot. However, the ball got away from Rivas and Tyler Vitelli scored to give North Georgia a 2-1 lead in the 73
rd minute.
Vukasin Lukovic converted a penalty kick in the 81
st minute for insurance.
Flagler's goal came when Hornburg put back
Oliver Lindstrom's initial shot that was saved. A corner kick came into the box and Lindstrom got his right foot on it, but the North Georgia keeper was able to stop the shot, but Hornburg was there waiting to clean up the mess.
Alexsa Lukic recorded six saves for the Nighthawks while Rivas finished with four.
North Georgia out-shot Flagler 20-14 as Isaac Calderon led the way with four. Hornburg and
Luke Williams each had three shots for Flagler. The Saints had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 15 fouls while North Georgia committed 12. Both teams played a man down after straight red cards were given to a player on each side simultaneously.
