ST. AUGUSTINE –
Luke Williams and
Filip Hornburg scored goals in the second half to lead Flagler College to a 3-1 win over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 6-2-4 overall and 3-1-3 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won four-out-of-the-last five matches against the Lakers, and the second one this season. Clayton State dropped to 4-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. Flagler visits Lander University on Wednesday.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Saints took advantage of a miscue by the Lakers. A Flagler player sent a cross into the box at the near post. The Clayton State keeper swatted the ball down, but the ball hit a Laker defender and went into the goal.
Flagler took the lead for good in the 67
th minute when
Owen Cunha's service into the box connected with Williams who was closing in on the far-right post. He one-touched the ball with his right foot for the goal.
Hornburg gave the Saints an insurance goal in the 81
st minute when he knocked in a shot off an
Alex Alexandrou assist.
Ryan Rivas recorded four saves for Flagler while George Roke failed to record a save for Clayton State.
The Lakers out-shot the Saints 13-9 and were led by Gonzalo LaChica's match-high four shots.
Oliver Lindstrom and
Finn Weigelt each had two shots for Flagler. Clayton State had a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-1, but Flagler had 16 fouls while the Lakers had nine.
