DAHLONEGA, Ga. – A late 24-6 run by No. 7 (WBCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia helped in a 76-52 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the UNG Convocation Center.
North Georgia remained un defeated at 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Saints played their second game in a row against a top 25 team. Flagler hosts USC Aiken on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Flagler, who had trailed by as many as 19 in the game, was able to go on a 15-2 run to trim the deficit to six (48-42) with 2:21 left in the third quarter. Twelve of those points were scored consecutively and capped by a pair of
Marley Smith free throws.
Averie Jones' layup stopped the Flagler spurt and started North Georgia's 24-6 run. Emily Trushel capped it with a layup with 4:09 left in the game to give the Nighthawks a 72-48 lead.
UNG out-scored Flagler 22-10 in the fourth quarter and held the Saints to a 15.8 (3-19) field goal percentage in the final 10 minutes.
Sharale McCormick led the Saints with 18 points and she grabbed four rebounds to go along with three steals.
Marley Smith added 13 points and seven rebounds while
Destiny McClendon contributed 10 points coming off the bench.
Trushel scored a game-high 26 points and corralled nine rebounds for North Georgia. Caroline Martin added 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jones tacked on 15 points, nine boards, and had four steals.
