ST. AUGUSTINE –
Abby Smith scored a team-high 14 points in Flagler College's 69-60 loss to Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gym.
Lander improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in league play. Up next for the Saints is No. 5 (WBCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Flagler led for the majority of the first quarter until Lander went on a 16-4 spurt that snapped a 16-15 Saints lead. Shcira Fowles capped the run with a pair of buckets midway through the second quarter to give Lander a 31-20 lead. Fowles finished with a double-double as she scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
The Saints would chip away and cut the deficit to four before both teams headed to the locker rooms with the Bearcats holding a 35-29 lead.
Lander increased its lead to as many as 17 in the fourth quarter before surviving a 7-2 run by Flagler in the final minute and a half.
Sharale McCormick added 13 points for the Saints while
Marley Smith and
Jessica Dowdy each scored six points and grabbed five rebounds.
Jazmine Major contributed seven points and tallied four assists.
All five starters for the Bearcats scored in double figures. Quadaija Langley finished with 14 points while Courtney Nesbitt added 13 points. Aliyah Bello and Trinity Thomas contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
