ST. AUGUSTINE –
Marley Smith led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points as Flagler College edged Georgia College & State University 87-84 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
Flagler won its second game in a row and improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt. The Saints snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bobcats. Georgia College lost its second game in a row and has dropped five of its last seven. The Bobcats are 8-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is Augusta University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Augusta, Georgia.
Flagler had its lead cut to two (86-84) after a three-pointer by Georgia College's Evie DePetro with three seconds left in the game. Smith was fouled with 0.9 seconds left and made the second of two free throws to put the game away.
The Saints excelled in shooting free throws with less than two minutes to go in the contest. Flagler made 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Flagler led for the majority of the game and held its largest lead of 10 points in the third quarter.
Jazmine Major added 13 points and six rebounds for the Saints.
Destiny McClendon supplied 12 points while
Sharale McCormick tacked on 11 points.
Carleigh Grimm grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds.
Deshona Gaither tallied a game-high 20 points for the Bobcats. She made 11-of-13 free throw attempts. Hannah Cail added 14 points while Ashyia Willis tacked on 12 points and had five assists. DePetro finished with 12 points. Jada Warren grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
