SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Andrea Fernandez scored a pair of goals and added an assist to help Flagler College defeat Converse University 4-2 in a non-conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the Hayden Abney Fulp Field at Weisiger Stadium.
Flagler improved to 1-0-1 on the season while Converse dropped to 1-1-0. Flagler hosts Florida Tech on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Saints Field.
The Saints scored a pair of goals in the first half, but the Valkyries netted a pair in the early stages of the second half to tie the score.
In the 56
th minute, Fernandez's free kick went into the box where
Paige Churchill had broken free of her defender and with her left foot, re-directed ball into the back of the net.
Fernandez added an insurance goal in the 80
th minute.
Cisel Akguel scored a goal and assisted on another.
Henley Grunst finished with six saves for Flagler while Gabriella Gudeman recorded three for Converse.
The Saints outshot the Valkyries 20-14 and enjoyed a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 10 fouls while Converse had seven.
