DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
Paige Churchill scored the equalizer in the 30
th minute but No. 8 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia scored the game-winner in the 62
nd minute in a 2-1 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal Wednesday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex.
North Georgia, the top seed in the tournament, improved to 17-1-1 overall and will host the championship match on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Columbus State University. Flagler's season concludes with a 10-7-3 record.
Presley Ancheta dispossessed the ball from a North Georgia player and then threaded a through ball to Churchill at the top of the box. Churchill pivoted and with her right foot snuck the ball behind the Nighthawks goalkeeper, who was off balance, and the ball rolled into the goal to tie the match up at 1-all.
Chloe Diaz scored the game-winner after a pair of quick one-touch passes got to her at the top of the box. She laced a right-footed shot just inside the left post to put North Georgia back on top.
Isabelle Lee finished with one save for North Georgia while
Phoebe Carpenter finished with a season-high nine saves for Flagler.
The Nighthawks out-shot the Saints 26-9, and Grace McGill led the way with six. Churchill led Flagler with four shots. UNG held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. North Georgia committed 12 fouls while Flagler was whistled for 11.
