DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Flagler College volleyball kicked off the 2024 season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18) win over Georgian Court University.
The Saints improved to 1-0 on the season while Georgian Court fell to 0-2.
Jordan Berglin and
Cassidy Bloom led the offense with nine kills each.
Meredith Dixon and
Clare Sheedy both added six kills each with
Gracie Fleming added five. Sheedy tallied an outstanding 31 assists.
The great wall of Saints put a stop to the scoring efforts from Georgian Court with a whopping 10 blocks at the net. Fleming recorded six block assists to go along with two block assists for an impressive eight total blocks. Berglin contributed three more.
Flagler did an impeccable job covering the floor with 32 digs coming from eight different players. Berglin led the charge with eight while the libero,
Lexi Basler, added seven.
In the first set, the Saints capitalized on a Lions attack error to break the 3-3 tie for the second lead of the game. Bloom went to the service line and picked up an ace to give Flagler the 5-3 lead and never looked back, taking the first set 25-17.
The Saints started the second set the way they finished the first with the hot hands. They nabbed a 2-0 advantage within the first two plays and led for the entirety of the set. Flagler led by as many as 12 points.
The third and final set went to the Saints, but not without a fight from the Lions, who led the set until a 6-6 tie was broken by Dixon. Flagler took a 7-6 lead and never gave it up to secure the win.
Flagler continues their Bahama House Classic stay with an 11 a.m. match against UNC Pembroke and a 6 p.m. contest with host team, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
