Flagler and Limestone open the season with a 1-1 draw

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Cisel Akguel scored the match's first goal as Flagler College and Limestone University played to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference women's soccer match Thursday evening at Saints Field.

Flagler extended its undefeated streak in season openers to 10 (8-0-2). Flagler heads to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday to face Converse University at 3 p.m.

The freshman forward from Kamen, Germany split two defenders on the left side of the field and rocketed a shot just inside the far post to give Flagler a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute in the "Battle of the Saints."

Flagler had opportunities early in the first half as Paige Churchill hit the post twice.

Just over six minutes into the second half, Delaney Williams sent a cross pass in from the right sideline to Lucia Hidalgo who tapped the ball in, off her right foot, past the charging Flagler keeper, Henley Grunst.

In the 75th minute, Samantha St. Pierre hit the crossbar, which could have given Flagler the lead.

Grunst tallied three saves for Flagler while Rosemary Elliott had one save.

Flagler held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a similar 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Limestone was whistled for 14 fouls while Flagler only had four.
