Saints open conference play with road sweep of GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Jordan Berglin recorded a match-high 12 kills while Molly Boyd added 10 more to help Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) win over Georgia College & State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball match Sunday afternoon at the Centennial Center.

Flagler improved to 5-6 on the season and 1-0 in the PBC. GCSU fell to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Flagler heads to North Carolina on Friday to face Wingate University at 5 p.m.

Boyd finished with a .389 hitting percentage as she had only three errors on 18 swings and she added three total blocks. Stempkowski and Bloom each had eight kills. Sheedy led the assisting effort with 37.

Lexi Basler led the defense with 17 digs on the afternoon. Bloom added eight more.

For the Bobcats, Sarah Pipping and Camryn Carlton led the offense with six kills each. Alanis Bernis finished with 11 digs.

The Saints started the first set off hot thanks to a 4-0 run and eventually led 7-1. The Bobcats got the set with in one (15-14), but the Saints pulled away for a 25-20 win. Boyd had four kills and Basler collected 10 digs.

The second set featured four ties and three lead changes. Flagler pulled away with a 3-0 spurt that gave the Saints a commanding 15-10 lead. Meredith Dixon and Colby Stempkowski had a double-block in that run. Berglin led the Saints with five kills and hit .300 as she had only two errors on 10 swings. 

The third set had five ties and four lead changes, but Flagler took control late with a 4-0 run to wipe out a 19-18 deficit. Berglin had back-to-back kills in that spurt. Bloom and Berglin each had  four kills, but Bloom had a .667 hitting percentage as sh had six errorless swings.
