ST. AUGUSTINE – Jorge Sandoval was tripped up in the box in the 80
th minute and Rafael Oliveira Pais converted the penalty kick as the University of North Georgia edged Flagler College 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
Flagler fell to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia won its third match in a row and improved to 4-3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is another conference match on Wednesday against Georgia Southwestern State University at Saints Field. The match is listed to begin at 6 p.m., but both sides are trying to kick-off at 4 p.m. Please see any updates on flaglerathletics.com.
Sandoval received a long ball and was charging into the box when
Ryan Rivas, Flagler's goalkeeper, came out to try and prevent a breakaway goal. Rivas went low and Sandoval was knocked off his feet in the box and a penalty kick was awarded.
Flagler took the early lead in the match when
Xavier Ryan was in the right place at the right time in the 30
th minute. Aleksa Lukic, the North Georgia goalkeeper, had a poor clear and put the ball on the foot of Ryan. Ryan then chipped the ball over the keeper into a wide-open net.
Santiago Cano netted the equalizer for the Nighthawks in the 67
th minute.
Rivas finished with four saves for the Saints while Lukic tallied seven for the Nighthawks.
North Georgia out-shot Flagler 16-13, but the Saints held a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
