GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Toby McCallum headed in
Luke Williams' cross with only 1:08 left to play as Flagler College defeated Lander University 3-2 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at Van Taylor Field.
Flagler remained undefeated at 5-0-1 overall and is 2-0-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints snap a three-match winless streak (0-2-1) to the Bearcats and it was the first time Flagler won a match in Greenwood (0-8-2). Lander dropped to 1-3-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. Flagler hosts the University of North Georgia this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Saints Field.
The Saints gained possession in its own half of the field with 1:24 left to go on the clock.
Philip Jung received a long pass on the right sideline and dribbled toward the center of the field, about 45 yards away from the goal. His touch pass went to McCallum who redirected the ball to Williams at the top right corner of the box. Williams lofted a pass to the back post, that was slightly deflected by a Lander player, and McCallum headed the ball into the back of the net.
In the first half,
Xavier Ryan scored the equalizer in the 38
th minute and just 26 seconds before the half,
Max Gottwald gave Flagler a 2-1 lead after he converted a penalty kick.
Callum Stokes tied the game in the 85
th minute for the Bearcats.
Ryan Rivas recorded two saves for the Saints while Juan Rodriguez did not save a shot on goal.
Flagler out-shot Lander 11-8, but Lander held the edge in corner kicks, 7-1.
